Things to Do in Tampa, FL: Discover the Tampa Bay History Center

by Nicolas A Scaron PLLC

If you want to get a real feel for Tampa's history, the Tampa Bay History Center on the Riverwalk downtown is worth a visit. It's Smithsonian-affiliated and does a good job making history genuinely engaging, not just informative.

12,000 Years of Florida History

The exhibits take you from the indigenous peoples who first lived in the area, through the Spanish explorers who arrived in the 1500s, up through Tampa becoming the modern city it is today. Artifacts, maps, and interactive displays throughout.

Hands-On Exhibits

From early Florida pioneers to the cigar industry that built Ybor City, the exhibits are interactive, not just look-and-read. The Treasure Seekers Gallery covers pirates and maritime explorers who sailed Florida's waters — one of the more fun stops.

Dining and Views

Grab a bite at Columbia Café, an extension of the famous Columbia Restaurant, with Cuban-inspired food and a nice waterfront view.

Planning Your Visit

Located at 801 Water Street, Tampa, FL. Open year-round — a solid stop if you want to connect with the city's history.
