A New Chapter for Tampa Bay? Rays and Hillsborough College Begin Stadium Talks

The Tampa Bay Rays took a real step toward a new home this week. Hillsborough College's Board of Trustees unanimously approved a non-binding agreement to start formal talks with the team about redeveloping part of the Dale Mabry campus. It's not a done deal — this memorandum of understanding doesn't lock in a stadium — but it does kick off a structured negotiation between the Rays and the college.

The plan on the table would turn more than 100 acres of college property into a mixed-use district anchored by a new ballpark. Hillsborough College would keep a portion of the land for a modernized campus, while the Rays would explore a long-term lease on the rest — potentially close to a century.

This isn't just about a stadium. Early projections from the team point to job creation and a revitalized corridor with retail, hospitality, and entertainment mixed in, which could reshape that whole part of Tampa if it actually happens.

Worth being clear: nothing is finalized yet. No approvals, financing, or construction plans are locked in, and city, county, and possibly state reviews still need to happen before this moves forward. The agreement itself can change or fall apart as talks continue.
